1. Can the 5th year students or BA degree holders apply for the Kirkland grants?
No. Eligible candidates for the Program must be graduates of a 5-year program of studies at schools of higher education.
2. Are candidates for the Kirkland grants required to have an MA degree?
It is required to be a graduate of a 5-year program of studies at schools of higher education with an MA or a “specialist” degree at the time of application.
3. Is Polish language proficiency required in case of candidates who select a specific study program with English as language of instruction?
Candidates who select a specific study program with English as language of instruction should at least understand spoken and written Polish.
4. Where can one find the information on university courses offered in English?

5. What should the Project Statement include?
The Project Statement should include:
- The main objectives of the project linked with the candidate's qualifications and expertise. The candidates should be able to connect their past experience with their goals.
- A proposed specific study program and suggested placement in a Polish school of higher education.
- A proposed type of professional internship and the type of desirable institution in which internship can be arranged
- Significance of the project for the field as well as the candidate's institution, the home country and his/her own professional development.
- Further plans related to the project upon return; the likely impact of the candidate's Kirkland experience.
6. As you work on your application, is it necessary for the candidate to contact the school with which he/she would like to be affiliated?
Direct contact with the proposed school chosen by the candidate is not required at that stage. It is enough to specify in the application the name of the institute, department and university in which the candidate would like to carry out his/her project. The Kirkland Selection Committee makes final decisions on the nominees' places the affiliation at the end of June.
7. Is it necessary to submit any official documents confirming the candidate's professional experience (employment)?
No such documents from the candidate's current and previous employers are required. The authenticity of information in the application is confirmed by the candidate's signature.
8. Are student internships regarded as professional experience?
Yes, but only under the condition that the internships involved full time work load, i.e. 40 hours/week. In such case, candidates are required to provide relevant documentation specifying the work load.
9. Should the application documents be sent by regular mail to the Commission or is it enough to send them electronically (via e-mail)?
The candidates are not required to sent the applications by regular mail — it is enough to attach scans of the documents to the on-line form or send them by e-mail. The only hardcopy required is the registration confirmation document which be printed out, signed by the candidate and send by regular mail.
Please make sure that your documents have been sent early enough to reach the Fulbright Commission by March 15, 2009. Program Selection Committee will review only applications with complete set of documents.
Should the registration confirmation document, sent by regular mail, reach Commission by March 15, 2009, or the submission deadline refers only to the application documents?
Confirmation document is a part of the application documents and should reach Fulbright Commission by March 15.
11. Does the Kirkland Program allow studying the fields other than those specified in the Program announcement?
The main purpose of the Lane Kirkland Scholarship Program is to share the experiences of the Polish transformation with other countries. Therefore, the eligible fields include only those strictly connected with systemic, political and economic transformation, specified in the announcement.
12. Can reference letters be e-mailed to the Commission?
Two original letters of reference, signed by the referees, should be scanned and send by e-mailed together with all the required documents (i.e. scans) at Kirkland2009@fulbright.edu.pl.
13. Is it possible to get any university degree through participation in the Kirkland Program?
The Kirkland Program offers two-semester non-degree graduate studies with the aim to develop the fellows' knowledge and skills. None of the Polish state university one-year programs offers the possibility of getting a scholarly degree. Upon completion of the program, successful participants receive prestigious certificates of appreciation.
14. Are individuals studying in Poland at the time of application eligible for the Kirkland grants?
Yes, they are, but preference is given to those who have not studied at Polish schools of higher education.
15. What is the required language of the Kirkland semester and diploma papers?
The first semester paper can be written in the language other than Polish with the grantee's academic advisor's consent. The language of the second semester paper as well as the diploma thesis must be written in Polish. The grantees enrolled in a study program with English as the language of instruction, prepare their papers in English.
16. What are the financial conditions of the Program?
Monthly stipend paid to Kirkland grantees in Polish currency: 600 USD. In addition, the scholarship covers the following costs: university fees; accommodation; insurance; one return ticket to Poland; public transportation tickets; purchase of research materials. Laptop computers and printers, provided to the grantees for the period of scholarship, can become the property of the grantees only after all the scholarship program requirements have been fulfilled.
