Photojournalist Carolyn Drake, who was in Ukraine on the Fulbright Graduate Student Program (2005-06), won second prize in the World Press Photo Competition 2008 for her pictures from Torez, a coal mining town in Ukraine went to several times with another Fulbright Fellow Andrew Matheny. Prizes for photos in 2007 were awarded to 59 photographers of 23 nationalities. The awards reflected a wide range of media from around the world, with pictures from magazines, smaller agencies and non-Western media becoming increasingly prominent.
