I am really happy that I can experience such a wonderful educational and academic environment as the University of Michigan. It has a very rich academic, cultural and student life as well as great educational opportunities. How do I use them?
- I am attending some classes related to Southeast Asian studies (by Professors Linda Lim, Allen Hicken, John Whitmore, Robert Stern) as well as public lectures, presentations, conferences, cultural events (among recent topics: Burma events, “Traditional Modernity: Identity and Culture in Asian Performance Arts,” “U.S. Foreign Policy in the New Decade”).
- I am working with materials in the library for my project on Southeast Asian regionalism and its influence on international relations in the Asian Pacific area. By the way, the library is really great!
- I am also preparing for upcoming Occasional Lecturer Program (OLP) presentations on contemporary Ukrainian political experience and Ukrainian-Russian relations.
- Communication is also an important part of my experience.
- My 18-year-old daughter is studying Spanish in college as well as practicing English through everyday usage.
- On weekends we travel. We visited two Ukrainian parks close to Ann Arbor and attended a Ukrainian annual meeting there (a photo attached - 09/09/2007), the city of Chicago and its Ukrainian neighborhood, known as the “Ukrainian Village” (2 photos attached), Traverse City (near Lake Michigan), Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum.
I don't have pictures related to my academic activity since. I haven't had lectures or presentations yet. Those will start in December-January. Right now, I am including some photos of the places of interest we visited.
We feel very comfortable here. People are very friendly and always smiling. My daughter and I are grateful to the Fulbright Program for this enriching experience.
In November and December I continued auditing three classes at the University of Michigan (UM). I also visited some interesting public events such as a presentation on U.S. - China Relations by Zhou Wenzhong, the People's Republic of China Ambassador to the USA; a conference call with Professor Jagdish Bhagwati of Columbia University, author of the book In Defense of Globalization; Slavic Day at UM, including a lecture on Holodomor by Hennadii Boriak, Deputy Director General of the State Committee of Archives of Ukraine. I also participated as a dialogue partner with students who are learning Ukrainian at the university.
Since I am going home soon (in February) I have to focus on my research preliminary summary to be presented at my Center for Southeast Asian studies in January. There is still a lot of work to be done here. The library is very rich in materials and unfortunately I have only been able to study some of them.
As part of OLP I will lecture on Ukrainian-Russian relations at Miami International University in January. In general I have enjoyed being in Ann Arbor, Michigan very much. What I like about U.S. most of all, is the rule of law. All people know their duties well; they are professionals and appreciate their jobs very much. They are pleasant and do their best to provide services -- be it at the university, the library, the bank, the store, etc.
I like the American system of education. It is strict and flexible simultaneously. I like its strict discipline and strong requirements for students. I like its interesting and active campus life. I like the fact that students are free to choose classes and institutions without restrictions and education is available to everyone.
I liked Thanksgiving and Christmas in America, Christmas carols in the streets, pre-holiday shopping, holiday services in the Ukrainian Catholic Church, etc.
The biggest problem we (my daughter and I) had in U.S. is lack of appropriate transportation. I don't have a car or a driver's license. That's why even going to the supermarket or a shopping mall was a problem because they are located outside of the city. The second problem emerged when my daughter had teeth problem and we had no dental insurance. These, however, are small problems compared with the great pleasure we derived in being in a country where everything seems to work and makes one feel free and comfortable.

Передусім хочу щиро подякувати програмі Фулбрайта за той цінний незабутній досвід, який я здобула завдяки їй.
Так склалося, що у мого покоління, яке здобуло середню і вищу освіту в радянські часи, набагато менше можливостей для ознайомлення із зарубіжним досвідом, ніж у сучасної молоді. Програма Фулбрайта надає таку можливість і створює прекрасні умови для подальшого розвитку кожного свого учасника, при чому не лише в професійній сфері. Перебування в американському суспільстві, ознайомлення з професійною діяльністю американських колег, робота в університетських аудиторіях і бібліотеках значно розширює наш світогляд, продукує нові ідеї, дозволяє більш критично оцінити свою попередню діяльність та українське суспільство загалом.
Завдяки програмі імені Фулбрайта мені дуже пощастило потрапити до прекрасного місця - Університету Мічигану (University of Michigan) в містечку Ен Арбор, штат Мічиган. А ще мені пощастило зустріти там гарних друзів, які зробили наше перебування в Америці дуже приємним і затишним. Хоч цьому сприяло все, що нас оточувало.
Приналежність до програми Фулбрайта відкривала нам широкі можливості. Так, під час мого перебування в Енн Арборі я мала прекрасну можливість відвідувати заняття в університеті, численні публічні лекції, презентації, конференції, культурні заходи з питань, що входили в сферу мого наукового інтересу. Велике задоволення я отримала від роботи в університетській бібліотеці, в якій зібрала численні матеріали для подальшої наукової роботи. Важливим для мене був досвід виступів перед американською аудиторією з презентаціями «Інтеграційні процеси в Східній Азії» (University of Michigan, Center for Southeast Asian Studies) та «Результати виборів в Україні та Росії: наслідки для Європи» (Florida International University, Miami, European Union Center) в рамках Occasional Lecture Program).
Я також мала можливість брати участь у навчальному процесі студентів Університету Мічигану, що вивчають українську мову; познайомитися з членами місцевої української громади. Дуже важливою для мене була можливість поїхати до Америки зі своєю 19-річною дочкою. Думаю, що перебування в Америці багато в чому визначить її подальший життєвий шлях.
Велике значення для мене як викладача мало вивчення методики викладання та організації учбового процесу в американських університетах. Після закінчення терміну перебування в Америці за стипендією Фулбрайта я
- внесла зміни до змісту та методики викладання курсів, що викладаються мною в Київському національному університеті імені Тараса Шевченка;
- подала до друку статтю з результатами дослідження, здійсненого мною під час перебування в Університеті Мічигану;
- в квітні 2008 р. взяла участь в міжнародній конференції Асоціації з дослідження національностей (ASN, Columbia University, New York City);
- працюю над реалізацією ряду ідей і проектів, які з'явилися у мене під час перебування в Америці. А їх багато!
