UKRAINE AND RUSSIA: THE PAST AND THE FUTURE OF MUTUAL INFLUENCE

 

An Annual Conference for Alumni of the US Academic Exchange Programs from Ukraine

 

Sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine and the George F. Kennan Fund

 

Organized by the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars’ Kennan Institute
Kyiv Project, and the Kennan Institute Ukrainian Alumni Association

 

September 4 -7, 2008

 

The Kennan Kyiv Project of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars is pleased to announce the annual conference “Ukraine and Russia: the Past and the Future of Mutual Influence” that will take place on September 4-7, 2008.

 

The conference seeks to bring together Ukrainian alumni of the Kennan Institute and other U.S. government sponsored academic exchange programs to discuss the interaction between Ukraine and Russia in different historical periods and social spheres, as well as prospects for its development. 

 

Possible topics for discussion include, but are not limited to:

 

  • The History of Relations between Ukraine and Russia;
  • The Role of Ukraine in Russian Empire and the Empire’s Impact on Ukraine;
  • The Common Past and its Influence on Contemporary Development of the two Nations and their Relations;
  • Contemporary Strategic Partnership and Prospects for the Future;
  • The Impact of Russia on Ukraine’s Post-Independence Development and Nation Building;
  • The Ukrainian Factor in Contemporary Russian Policy;
  • Mutual Influences in the Spheres of Culture, Art, Education, and Science;
  • Famous Ukrainians in Russia and Famous Russian in Ukraine. 

 

All Kennan Institute and U.S. academic exchange programs’ alumni are encouraged to send papers on topics that fit the conference theme.

 

If you are willing to take part in the conference, please,
send your papers to us before July 15, 2008

 

The papers should be sent by email and should not exceed 20,000 characters (10 pages). Please, include your full name, scientific degree, affiliation, program of which you are alumnus and its administering organization, as well as your contact information. Applications should be in Ukrainian. Later submissions will not be reviewed and accepted.

 

Based on the texts received, the organization committee will select participants and form panel groups.
