Being a Fulbrighter in New York City

Before coming to United States as a Fulbright Fellow, I knew that New York City (NYC) must be unique since its name also became the entire state's name, and that there must be something very special about living and studying in this world center of urbanity.

As a specialist in contemporary art and critical theory, I also knew that NYC was most probably the best place in the world to study these subjects. However, I gravely underestimated my luck. It has turned out to be much more than that. Now I realize that, thanks to the Fulbright program, I am fortunate to study contemporary art in the city without which my topic would perhaps not even exist. What more can one ask? Of course, everyday life in New York is rather tough. Here you have to “do everything on your own,” as they say. But it is an experience I truly cherish, because the amount of new things I have learned since my arrival is by all accounts breathtaking.

I have been auditing amazing classes at the New School University and at New York University, one of which was conducted by famous New York art critic Dr. Jed Perl, while the other was by Dr. Avital Ronell, who had been Jasques Derrida's apprentice. I attendrd a number of lectures by visiting professors, including some of the world's best thinkers, such as Alain Badiou, Slavoy Zizek, Judith Butler, Etienne Balibar.

I also managed to establish wide academic contacts and to talk about my research with several leading specialists in art history. My contact with my Academic Advisor Dr. Elzbieta Matynia proved to be especially invigorating; we have shared our research experience and materials and have attended a number of art presentations together.

However, the experience of exploring NYC art museums and contemporary art galleries has been the most astonishing part of my work here; without it my research would not have move as fast as it has.

Using a theoretical framework I developed here, I wrote an article “Narcissus Mirrors: Young Ukrainian Art” for Kurbasivski Chytannya, a Ukrainian academic almanac. I also finished a part of my dissertation and translated it into English in order to obtain advice and comments from the members of U.S. academia who are interested in my research.

In addition, I participate in the cultural life of the local Ukrainian community and am a member of the Ukrainian choir Promin. I even participated in its Christmas concert held at the Ukrainian Institute of America. All in all, I am very grateful to the Fulbright Foundation for providing me with an opportunity to expand so significantly my academic knowledge and professional expertise as well as for enabling me to participate in an intercultural exchange of the highest quality imaginable. If I could express my New Year wish to future Fulbrighters, it would be to experience this wonderful feeling of unfolding one's opportunities and of one's professional life soaring a few levels higher all at once.

Being a Fulbrighter in New York City for more than 9 months, you gradually become accustomed to the feeling of the big city's great heart pulsing somewhere close to you all the time. A complex and fascinating contemporary urban labyrinth, full of unexpected twists and turns, this "garden of forking paths" can unpredictably lead you to lots of unexpected intellectual journeys, exciting encounters, and highly enriching cultural experiences about which you could not even have dreamt.

And this is exactly what happened to me in this city… In my field of art history and cultural philosophy, I was lucky to be able to listen to lectures by many of the most notable and respectable specialists from all over the world. It must be that New York attracts them by its vivid and almost hyperactive academic life.

I personally became acquainted with some leading art critics and artists whom I have always admired back home. Here museums and galleries offer you the possibility of rigorously scrutinizing art works of every possible period and origin. For contemporary art, I feel that this is really the best place to be in the world. Right now, I feel intellectually restless and not certain about anything…

An entire new horizon of ideas has opened before me, which I am so eager to explore. It does not even bother me that I do not know, where this new challenge will lead me. I do believe that it is this feeling of reaching for new horizons and discovering new directions, which become the essential discovery and the great gift of a Fulbright experience.

Бути фулбрайтівцем в Нью-Йорку

Перед тим як приїхати до Сполучених Штатів працювати над своїм дослідженням під егідою стипендії Фулбрайт, я знала, що Нью-Йорк є єдиним містом в США, що подарував своє ім'я цілому штату, і є винятковим урбаністичним центром, а тому має бути щось особливе стосовно навчання та життя в ньому. Як спеціаліст в галузі сучасного мистецтва та критичних теорій, я також знала, що Нью-Йорк, ймовірно, є одним з найкращих місць у світі, де можна вивчати ці предмети. Між тим, здається, я серйозно недооцінила мою удачу. Нью-Йорк, як виявилося, зміг запропонувати набагато більше. Тепер я розумію, що, завдяки програмі Фулбрайт, мені пощастило вивчати сучасне мистецтво в тому місті, без якого предмет мого вивчення, можливо, просто не існував. Чого можна бажати ще? Звичайно, повсякденне життя в цьому місті є непростим, і потрібно вчитися вирішувати свої проблеми самотужки. Але я високо ціную цей досвід, тому що об'єм нових речей, які мені відкрилися після мого приїзду сюди, є справді захоплюючим.

Я прослухала кілька фантастичних курсів в університеті Нью Скул та Нью-йоркському університеті, один з них вів відомий нью-йоркський критик сучасного мистецтва Джед Перл, а інший Авіталь Ронел, учениця Жака Дерріди. Я скористалася можливістю відвідати велику кількість лекцій, які давали відвідуючі професори, включаючи таких всесвітньовідомих мислителів та теоретиків як Славой Жижек, Алан Бадью, Джудіт Батлєр, Етьєн Балібар. Також мені вдалося налагодити академічні зв'язки з кількома провідними спеціалістами в області історії та теорії мистецтв. Моє спілкування з моїм академічним керівником професором Ельжбєтою Матинею виявилося надзвичайно надихаючим: ми ділилися академічним досвідом і матеріалами та відвідали разом кілька художніх презентацій.

Звичайно, досвід знайомства з нью-йоркськими музеями та галереями сучасного мистецтва є найбільш захоплюючою частиною моєї роботи тут, без якого моє дослідження не просувалося б такими темпами як наразі. Окрім описаного вище, я написала статтю «Нарцисові дзеркала: молоде українське мистецтво» для українського академічного альманаху «Курбасівські читання», використовуючи теоретичне підґрунтя, розроблене за допомогою опрацьованих тут матеріалів. Також я написала частину свого дисертаційного дослідження та переклала її англійською мовою для того, щоб отримати поради від американських вчених, що працюють у цій тематиці. Також я взяла участь у культурному житті місцевої української спільноти - стала членом українського хору «Промінь» та навіть вже співала з хором на різдвяному концерті в Українському інституті Америки. Я дуже вдячна Фундації Фублрайт за надання мені можливості такого значного розширення мого академічного досвіду та професійної експертної оцінки, а також за надання можливості такого якісного та повноцінного культурного обміну, який можна тільки уявити. Якби я могла висловити новорічні побажання майбутнім фулбрайтівцям, то це б було побажання того чарівного відчуття розгортання можливостей одночасно із зростанням професійної планки на кілька рівнів відразу.
