The Kyiv Office of the Kennan Institute and the Fulbright Program in Ukraine are pleased to invite you to a book talk "Total Wars and the Making of Modern Ukraine, 1914-1954" by Professor George O. Liber, to be held on Tuesday, July 5, 2016, 6:00 p.m., at the Fulbright Office (20 Esplanadna Street, Suite 904, M "Palats Sportu", Kyiv).

TOTAL WARS AND THE MAKING OF MODERN UKRAINE, 1914-1954

Between 1914 and 1954, the Ukrainian-speaking territories in East Central Europe suffered almost 15 million "excess deaths" as well as numerous large-scale evacuations and forced population transfers. These losses were the devastating consequences of the two world wars, revolutions, famines, genocidal campaigns, and purges that wracked Europe in the first half of the twentieth century and spread new ideas, created new political and economic systems, and crafted new identities. George O. Liber argues that the continuous violence of the world wars and interwar years transformed the Ukrainian-speaking population of East Central Europe into self-conscious Ukrainians. Wars, mass killings, and forced modernization drives made and re-made Ukraine's boundaries, institutionalized its national identities, and pruned its population according to various state-sponsored political, racial, and social ideologies. In short, the two world wars, the Holodomor, and the Holocaust played critical roles in forming post-1945 and post-1991 Ukraine.

George O. LIBER is Professor of History at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. In addition to Total Wars (University of Toronto Press, 2016), he is the author of Alexander Dovzhenko: A Life in Soviet Film (British Film Institute, 2002) and Soviet Nationality Policy, Urban Growth, and Identity Change in the Ukrainian SSR, 1923-1934 (Cambridge  University Press, 1992). With Anna Mostovych, he compiled Nonconformity and Dissent in the Ukrainian SSR, 1955-1975: An Annotated Bibliography (Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute, 1978).

The presentation will be conducted in English.

This event is free and open to the public, but please register.
