The Fulbright Program in Ukraine is pleased to invite you to a talk "Empowering Women through Technology" by Alana Jaskir, U.S. Fulbright Research Fellow 2017-2018.

Alana Jaskir graduated in 2017 from Princeton University with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Neuroscience. Alana is an English Teaching Assistant at the Institute of Water Management and Environmental Engineering in Rivne.

Technology affects nearly every aspect of our lives. Importantly, it gives us a powerful tool to solve real-world problems for ourselves and for our local and global communities. Despite being early pioneers in computer science, women now are statistically underrepresented in modern technology. Providing women and girls access to technological skills and training through programs such as Technovation, an international competition for young girls to solve problems through technology, diversifies the inventors of future technology and crucially empowers participants by showing ways through which they as individuals can impact their world.

Alana's teaching experiences as well as her own language learning have prepared her to undertake an ETA in Ukraine. In college, she served as a one-on-one tutor for computer science. She also volunteered with the University Student Government's BigSibs program, a community-approach mentorship program for middle school students that focuses on literacy and empowerment. Alana's internship in Tanzania, which included weekly math and science lessons at the local primary school to a group of thirty fifth-graders, gave her first-hand experiences on how to convey ideas and concepts to students despite a language barrier.

Alana applied to an ETA program to continue her love of teaching, and wants to use her computer science expertise to continue her work on empowering women through technology. Using her connections with NGOs and other computer science contacts in Ukraine, Alana hope to develop workshops and classes.
In October, Alana Jaskir and Aaron Kennett, Fulbright ETA grantee in Sumy, alongside many other Ukrainian volunteers, helped to bring the Technovation Ukraine to Sumy.
