The Changing Face of American Theatre and Actor Training

The shape of American theatre and how actor's learn their craft has always been linked. Today, a rapidly transforming conversation about identity, exciting new voices in playwriting, and the explosion of digital media create unique challenges and opportunities to reconsider what is at the core of teaching people to represent human-ness in performance. In this talk, Scott Illingworth, Assistant Arts Professor in the Graduate Acting Program at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, explores the history and trends in US theatre and actor training. He'll discuss some major recent productions, how NYU|Tisch trains actors, and what is on the horizon for theatre in the United States.

Scott Illingworth is an Assistant Arts Professor in the NYU|Tisch Graduate Acting Program and a freelance director. He is the author of the forthcoming book Exercises for Embodied Actors: Tools for Physical Actioning (Routledge, 2020) and has taught at universities and schools across the U.S. and internationally.

Directing credits span Off-Broadway, regional, and international work including new play collaborations with Lucas Hnath, Mona Mansour, Christina Anderson, Ken Urban, Stefanie Zadravec, Padraic Lillis, Keith Reddin, and Bill Bowers among others. He's worked at LAByrinth Theater Co, New Dramatists, Gloucester Stage, IRT, TimeLine Theatre, Collaboraction, Geva Theatre Center, Alchemy Theatre, Fringe NYC, Adirondack Theatre Festival, across the US, Europe, South America, and Asia.

His interactive projects include What I Learned On My Red State Vacation, a multi-media performance about his trip to the three most conservative rural counties in the U.S. to share every breakfast, lunch, and dinner with someone who lives there. He is also the curator/director of MileWalks, a solo-audience outdoor interactive urban theatrical experience.

Scott is a member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC) and is a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner (GCFT).
