Description:

Media literacy is one of the most important and vital skills to attain within our contemporary digital world.  Media literacy is the ability to access, critically analyze, educate and make media.  It is a fundamental skill necessary to enhance critical thinking, democratic practices and the humanization of society.  Come and join us to learn about, participate and develop your critical media literacy skills at this participatory student conference.  We will have traditional paper presentations, "how to" presentations and an interactive round-table/free thinking discussion where students will debate current topics regarding the media with questions from the audience.

To ensure the conference maintains gender equality, at least 50% of the presenters must be female.

All proposals will be peer reviewed by the MA students and visiting professor Dr. David Gracon from the Experiments in Media graduate seminar in the International Relations Department at Precarpathian National University.

Presentation Types (you can only choose and do one presentation):

1. Traditional Paper Presentation: Reading of paper; PowerPoint presentation (optional).  10-minutes each.  This will be followed with a question and answer session.

2. "How To" Presentation: Teach the audience some kind of media related skill.  How to make a short video?  How to create a blog?  How to take strong photos with a mobile phone?   How to make a fanzine or culture jam?  How to analyze a TV commercial?  How to critique the validity of media sources?  10-minutes each.  This will be followed with a question and answer session.

3. Round-Table Free Thinking: Four students will be asked a variety of questions regarding the media (drawn from the audience and the moderator) and there will be an open discussion on these topics.  This will be followed with a question and answer session.
